One of the original Nighthikers stories describes an outing to an island in the summer of 1999. The group’s equipment was unreliable, access was uncertain, and what looked like a trail eventually led into dense growth.
When a light came on, it became clear they had lost the path. They abandoned the plan and made their way back. The account captured the intensity of an early adventure, but it also recorded decisions we would approach differently today.
We’re preserving that memory as a reflection, not a route recommendation. Confirm permission before setting out. Use suitable equipment, keep a working light ready, and never treat an old story as proof that a place is open or safe.
A good night outdoors doesn’t require pushing through every obstacle. Sometimes the best story is the one that ends with everyone deciding to go home.
